Neutering Male Cats
There are many reasons for neutering male cats or kittens at a specialized veterinary clinic. In Squamish, our Garibaldi Veterinary Hospital can care for your pet and neutering needs. Neutering (castrating) surgery can be done at our clinic. The cost varies depending on the age and vaccine status of your pet. Please contact our Veterinarian to discuss a treatment plan and the neutering/castrating procedure in detail. We are also available by phone at 604-898-9089 to schedule this appointment.
The rationale for neutering (castrating) male cats or kittens is not just to help control the cat population. There are behavioural and medical reasons for this procedure as well.
Almost all male cats or kittens that are not neutered will spray or urine mark upon reaching sexual maturity. This behaviour can be exhibited on most anything in your household and the pungent odour of male cat urine makes this behaviour extremely unpleasant. Fortunately this behaviour can be all but eliminated by neutering male cats or kittens at 5-7 months of age or have reached appropriate weight of 1 kg. (2.2 lbs or larger)
Adult male cats will also have a strong desire to fight with other cats, particularly other male cats. Bite wounds are one of the commonest problems that cats are treated for and they can be the route of transmission of deadly viral diseases such as Feline Leukemia or Feline Immunosuppressive Virus.
For the above reasons neutering of a male cat or kitten must be considered routine for all male cats other than those few that are to be used for breeding purposes.
